Tips on How to Paint:

Painting Preparation -

In order to achieve professional painting results it is extremely important to prepare your painting surface and work space. As mentioned above it is also important that you have all the paint supplies necessary to complete your home painting job at your disposal before you begin your project.

The following steps should be followed for every room before starting to paint:

  1. Remove as much of the furniture from the room as possible and use your drop cloths - No matter how careful you try to be while painting it is almost impossible to prevent paint splatter. Try to remove as many items from the room as possible and cover the floors with your drop cloth. We recommend to tape down each corner of the drop cloth to prevent it from moving around. If you have big pieces of furniture in the room which are difficult to move we recommend to at least try and gather everything in the center of the room, as far away from the walls as possible, and throw a drop cloth over them.

  2. Clean wall surfaces before applying paint - Over time the walls of your home will collect dust or dirt or even grease in the kitchen. If the walls are not properly cleaned the paint or primer may not adhere to the wall. Lightly soiled and dusty areas can easily be removed with a damp cloth. To remove grease in the kitchen or oils from peoples hands touching the wall we recommend to use a small amount of bleach detergent or tri-sodium phosphate. It is very important to make sure that the cleaning material has been completely removed from the wall and that the wall is dry before starting to implement your painting ideas.

  3. Remove electrical outlet and light switch covers - It is very unaesthetic to have paint on your outlet covers therefore the easiest way to prevent this would be to remove the covers altogether. Another option would be to tape them off but this could be more time consuming.

  4. Taping off areas - The painters tape is a very useful and important tool to use while painting. Any area that you want to avoid getting paint on should be masked off such as wall trimmings, doors, windows and electrical fixtures. If it is a large area that you wish to cover then you should tape a drop cloth or masking paper over that area. If you are painting a single wall with a different color to the rest of the room you can tape off the adjacent walls and ceiling to avoid getting paint on them while painting the corners. Our paint kits come with the option of choosing different tape lengths and sizes depending on the specific requirements of your home painting project.

  5. Repairing holes and cracks in the wall - Having holes and cracks in your wall will obviously prevent a smooth finish from being achieved. By using your spackle blades which we include in our paint kits and a filling compound such as sealant or plaster you can easily fill these in. If the repair work was extensive you might have to paint over it with a primer before applying the paint. Primer also needs to be applied if you are trying to use acrylic or latex paint over an oil based one or if you are trying to paint over water damage or mold discolorations. Primer can be applied either by your paint roller or your paint brushes.

Applying the Paint -

Choosing the color of paint you wish to use is the first in completing the home painting process. We recommend looking through different home decorating magazines and websites to get different painting ideas for your own project.  Once you are ready to start painting it is important to keep in mind that every room or area you paint might have different surfaces from one another. Each surface requires a different technique and different paint tools to paint properly. Even the order in which you paint a surface may impact the overall results of your work. Before beginning to paint it is always useful to have a damp cloth or rag on hand which will make it easy to clean up drips or spills.

  1. Painting the ceiling - If painting the ceiling is part of your project then it should always be done first. While painting the ceiling you can expect some paint dripping and splatter to come down. If the ceiling of your room is a different color to the walls then painting it last will almost surely result in damaging the walls paint job. The average room ceiling is around 8 feet high, therefore if you are about 6 feet tall and up you will be able to reach easily from the floor by just attaching the 12" extension pole to the paint roller handle. Other people might want to use a small step ladder.

  2. Cutting in the walls - The first step to successfully painting your walls is called "cutting in". This is when you use the 1.5" or 2.5" paint brushes to paint the corners between adjacent walls and between the walls and the ceiling where it is difficult for the paint roller to reach. You should create about a 2.5"- 3"gap into the wall you are painting so that the paint roller can then be used easily without having to come close to the edges risking getting paint on an area that you did not intend. Sometimes cutting in can require patience and a delicate touch. If you are painting one wall a different color to the walls and ceiling around it, in order to prevent paint from getting on those surfaces you can either tape off the other walls and ceiling or use the mixing stick which acts as a straight edger and splatter protector when you push the sharp edge into the corner of the wall. Or you can use the 1.5" angled brush to delicately trim the edges. A great example of this can be viewed here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FJTkCJsCao

  3. Painting the walls - Once you have finished cutting in your walls you can then use the 9" paint roller to conveniently finish painting the rest. First decide how much paint the area you are painting will require. If it is a large area you want to use the paint bucket which comes in our paint kits and can hold up to 3.5 gallons of paint. If it is a smaller area you can use the 9" tray. To load the roller cover with the proper amount of paint you want to dip it into the paint and then roll it 5 or 6 times over the roller grid to the point where no more paint is dripping off of it. If you repeat this 2 or 3 times you will successfully load your roller cover with an evenly distributed amount of paint. The best technique to using a roller is to make a W shape on the wall about 3 feet wide and then filling it in. This will guarantee the most even distribution of paint onto the wall. Finally, depending on how much time has passed from when you finish cutting in the wall to when you start using the paint roller you may notice that the paint you applied with the paint brushes has already started to dry. This might cause a line to form between the brush work and the roller work. In order to prevent this just take your 2.5" brush and with a small amount of paint on it feather out the line.

Finishing Touches and Completing your Home Painting Project -

The quality of a home painting project is dependent on many things; the paint tools you use, the colors and painting ideas you choose to implement and your final execution of it all. The finishing touches are very important to attaining a professional looking paint job and it is a stage of the home painting project which most novice painters don't pay enough attention to.

  1. Preparing the trim - Window panels, door frames, ceiling and floor trimmings are the last areas of a room you want to paint. They have smaller and usually more intricate surface areas and therefore require the greatest care when painting. Before applying the paint be sure to clean the surface from any dust or dirt. It is then recommended to use masking tape to tape off the surrounding areas to protect them from paint splatter. Out of the paint brushes you receive in our paint kits we recommend to use the 1" or 1.5" brush.

  2. Painting the trim - It is recommended to begin painting the trim starting with the areas closest to the ceiling and then working you way down. Using our paint brushes recommended above, start by delicately painting the edges and then work your way to the center of the trim with broad even brusg strokes. Do not put too much paint on your paint brush to avoid dripping, this will also prevent paint from seeping under the tape which is protecting the walls or carpet next to the trim you are painting. A second coat of paint might be required if you are using enamle paint. It is important to remember that whenever applying more than one coat of paint, wait for the first layer to dry before applying the second one.

  3. Finishing your home painting - After the paint has dried completely you can begin to remove the painters tape. Be sure to remove the tape by pulling gently to prevent the paint from peeling. If there is a lot of paint build up on your tape you might want to take a blade and cut along the edge to separate it. Make sure the room you have just completed painting has plenty of ventilaltion. This will help dissipate the fumes quickly.
